Randy currently practices in the areas of corporate/commercial law, real estate and financing. Transactional Work: Randy has vast experience in real estate transactions, development, and condominium property law (both commercial and residential). He has regularly acted as lead counsel on major commercial real estate transactions, and has been cited in L’Expert for acting on significant and complex Canadian commercial real estate transactions. In financing, Randy has been involved in a variety of lending transactions, representing both local and international financial institutions and commercial borrowers. Commercial Leasing: Randy has a large and well-recognized leasing practice, with extensive experience and expertise in all aspects of large and complex commercial, retail, office, industrial, crown land, indigenous land, and gas bar leasing transactions across Canada. Randy has acted for prominent national and local landlords as well as for local and international retailers and other tenants. Randy is routinely called upon by both legal counsel and clients, both locally and across Canada, for guidance on complex and unique commercial leasing transactions. Dental and Medical Practices: Randy has a well-established practice in setting up, buying, selling and leasing of dental and medical practices. Papers/Lectures: Randy has written and lectured on many legal topics, including on contract/lease negotiation, and drafting strategies; in personum versus in rem rights; the covenant of quiet enjoyment; relocation clauses in commercial leases; Landlord’s redevelopment rights; the meaning of best efforts and other “efforts” obligations; and restrictive covenants. Randy has also drafted course materials for real estate transactions. Professional Activities Member, Real Estate Subsection, Canadian Bar Association Member, Financing Subsection, Canadian Bar Association Member of Calgary Bar Association Drafted course materials for the Chinook College course: Selling Your Own Home. At the University of Alberta law school, Randy was an editor on the Alberta Law Review (Constitutional) and a volunteer for Student Legal Services. Prior to that, at the University of Calgary, Randy was a member of the University Debating Society and was an active committee member of the Jewish Students’ Association. CommunityICSC Law Conference Planning Committee for the Toronto Law Annual Law Conference from 2015 to 2024; presenter at conference from 2005 to present. From 2015, Randy has been on the ICSC Legal Update Panel where he prepares and presents annual papers, providing case law review and updates. Law Society Advisor Link Volunteer for Real Estate (Residential and Commercial), Real Estate (Condominium) and Corporate and Commercial (2018 – 2021). Assisting lawyers to ensure that the public receives quality legal services. Parlee McLaws LLP: Randy was the Commercial Real Estate Practice Group Leader from 2010 to 2019. He was on the Management Committee from 2015 to 2017 and was in the firm’s Advisory and Compensation Committee for several annual terms between 2011 to 2016. Randy was previously the Articling Committee Chair, and currently acts as a mentor to a senior associate under the firm’s mentorship program.
